I have some old history on closed accounts that I want to get off my credit report but first I need to know how to get the report. Some say they are free but you have to sign up for something else.

The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that U.S. consumers be entitled to a free credit report each year. The government’s goal is to make sure that consumers stay informed, fight identity theft, and get fair treatment. This is the government mandated website where you can get 1 free credit report from the 3 agencies for free in one year:

You can get your FREE credit report from the 3 credit reporting agencies — it is ABSOLUTELY FREE and the site will not even ask for your credit card information

Credit is one of the things in life that can put a great deal of stress into an otherwise okay world. Credit imposes a rating on us that defines who we are. If our credit is flawed with late payments or even bankruptcy, we are treated different than if we have good credit. Good credit ratings open doors in times of hardship and helps garner us the respect we deserve.

If your goal is to repair your credit rating the first step would be to get copies of your credit reports. You can get free reports any time you are turned down for credit by a credit card company, however in light of the ping your credit rating takes to have someone look at your rating as a possible lender, it may be worth just paying for them. Once you receive the reports, look them over very carefully.

If you have anything that looks out of the ordinary or suspicious on them, you should instantly file claims with the three main agencies. These disputes may remain on your record for up to six months while they are investigated. In the meantime, you should identify any delinquencies on your report and being to take care of them as soon as possible. Even making partial reports can keep delinquent payments from showing on the reports so be sure to talk to your creditor and agree upon a repayment plan. Once you establish what is on your report at this time and how you are going to take care of the items that are showing, make a plan to check it again on a regular basis to ensure there are no new unknown charges and to verify your efforts are working! This is the first step toward a lifetime of good debt management habits.

I am going to sign up for an identity theft protection service. I DO NOT want to hear any nonsense about how you may think they aren't worth the money because I can do it myself. I can file my own taxes, too, but I still go to H & R Block. What I want to know is what services should I look for when choosing a company. Please DO NOT suggest any specific company. Just suggest things that an identity theft service should provide so that I can look for things that maybe I haven't already thought about. Thank you for your answers.

Some of the insurance companies provide identity theft insurance. This is even better than contracting with an identity theft company. The insurer will pay in the event of a claim, and they have resources and outsourcing for companies they do business with– it's a great service and pretty cheap. Check that out- I know Allstate sells this coverage. You can get it with either a homeowner's policy, or with renter's insurance. If you call Allstate, they will tell you exactly what it covers, and from there, you can do your pricing with different companies to see what you like better. When you compare, you will see it isn't always "apples to apples"–so this way, you can get a good idea of what features are important to you.

I have been to several credit report sites that charge your credit card after the first free report. But I also saw someone post a site that actually is FREE with no credit card required! Does anyone know what the web site is called???
That's the one!!! The annual credit report worked. Thanks everyone!!!

The people who directed you to the website annualcreditreport.com are correct.

It sounds to me you don't want to give out personal information on the internet (not that you don't have a credit card or bank account). You will not have to supply a credit card or bank account number online to get your report from this website.

I've used this website annually since the law changed to allow consumers to receive a free credit report per year from each of the reporting bureaus. Be sure to get reports from all of them since there could be different information which appears on each one.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

seems like that is the rage here for the media in the US.

lately a school is being threatened to be cut off for federal monies due to an employee at the school "accidently" placing students social security i.d. numbers and names together on an open website.

I dont really know or understand what is the big deal regarding this, but do you have this type of scare over there?

what do you think of this? (big deal or not?

why and how so?

Thanks for your answers!
To anyone past the two answerers who have posted already…is it a big deal or not in the media in the UK?

No not at all I have had my bank account cleared out by someone who managed to get my card details.

If I contact my creditor, they will find out how to sue me. If I don't the interests will add up? How can I negotiate with my creditors without taking any risks. What negotiation terms should I ask for?

I am so sorry about all the mixed advice you have recieved here. First off, I commend you for wanting to fix your credit. Most take the hide and wait 7 years game. What they don't realize is that during those 7 years, your creditors can and most likely will get a judgment against you which will follow you for a long long time.

Your credit rating is a measure of how you pay your bills. People that complain about the way it is done don't like to pay their bills. Sure it has its flaws, but if you pay your obligations on time, there should be no problems.

Now, how to fix your credit….

Definitely call your creditors and work out a settlement. Check out the article at http://www.bestnewcreditcards.com/negotiate-with-creditors.htm on how to do this.

Next, get a secured credit card and use it right. http://www.bestnewcreditcards.com/effective-use-of-credit-card.htm will give you great advice on what to do.

Last, give it time. Your credit didn't get bad overnight, no matter how it seems so. Your credit history will get better as time progresses and you add positive history to it.

Good luck!
